Aftercare information
Aftercare is one of the most important parts of getting a tattoo. Having a good aftercare system will help keep your tattoo looking good for years to come! Below I will explain my recommendations for aftercare and general tips to be prepared for a tattoo!
Preparing for a tattoo
Preparing yourself and your skin for a new tattoo!
I highly recommend at least a week before, begin regularly exfoliating and moisturizing your skin if you don’t already. Drinking plenty of water and doing your best to stay out of the sun/no tanning.
The day before try your best to stay away from substances like drugs and alcohol. Having a good nights rest and a clear mind is always a plus!
We offer aftercare products at the shop, made by the owner, Jess Locke, a simple ingredient lotion that’s perfect for healing your tattoo! Please feel free to ask about this at your appointment :)
Second skin
I offer the option to use second skin during your healing process. I will apply the bandage to you when we are finished with our tattoo, this bandage will adhere to your skin almost like a bandaid and will cover the entirety of your tattoo. It is normal for fluid to build up underneath your tattoo while the bandage is on.
You can leave the bandage on for 1-3 days, but no longer than a week. It is waterproof so you are able to shower with it on, however you still should not submerge the tattoo under water or expose to excessive sweating/sun. You also should remove the bandage if it opens or begins to leak at any point. When removing your bandage, you should do so in the shower while pulling one of the top corners up and towards you. Remove gently then wash after.
Plastic Wrap
The plastic wrap should stay on for 1-2 hours and not any longer. When you remove the plastic wrap, you should do so at home and wash your tattoo after. I recommend washing your tattoo 2-3 times a day and moisturizing after each wash or when your tattoo feels dry. Please only use a small amount of moisturizer, too much can cause skin irritation.
It is normal after a tattoo for your skin to become red, itchy and flakey. It is important you do not scratch or pick at your healing tattoo!
I recommend using an anti bacterial soap like the unscented golden Dial soap. For moisturizing I recommend using the aftercare “Six” made and sold at Jurassic, or unscented Aveno or Lubriderm.
The brand of second skin I use is Recovery Derm Shield.
